Barefoot on Red Soil

A true story, an exceptional individual and a universal struggle in defense of human dignity and unrenounceable rights.

A simple man takes on two giants: the Vatican and the powerful landowners of Mato Grosso in Brazil. A fierce, courageous fight in defense of the poor and downtrodden.

The story unfolds during two significant periods in the life of Bishop Pere Casaldaliga. One was in 1988 when he was subjected to an "examination of faith" by Cardinals Gantin and Ratzinger in Rome's Vatican City. The other was 1968, the year he arrived in Sao Felix in Brazil at the age of 40, enthusiastic about the possibility of working as a missionary.

He soon discovered the sordid conditions of the lives of the most vulnerable: the downtrodden workers, exploited and often murdered with total impunity by the most powerful landowners, as authorities turned a blind eye in a flagrant travesty of justice.

A cruel, ruthless situation that Casaldaliga fought to the point of putting his own life in danger.

"Barefoot on Red Soil" is not just a moving story; it is a story that touches the soul and awakens a passionate sense of outrage and injustice.

Based on the book of the same name by Francesc Escribano, executive producer of the mini-series, "Barefoot on Red Soil" describes a part of the life of the Bishop of Sâo Félix, a universal model of Liberation Theology and the Church of the poor.

Filmed in Sâo Félix do Araguaia (Brasil) and Barcelona.
