El 1979, The Clash publiquen el seu tercer disc, "London calling". Sempre compromesos amb qüestions polítiques, trobaven que, amb Margaret Thatcher com a primera ministra britànica, era molt important fer arribar el missatge de protesta al jovent, i la música era un bon mitjà. A nivell musical, enriqueixen el seu punk dels començaments per fer un disc doble amb diversitat de gèneres, en el que s'ha anomenat postpunk.01 The Clash - "London calling"
