Whilst Spud is collecting some eggs for breakfast, he spots the large amount of straw delivered the previous day and overhears Bob and Farmer Pickles having a conversation. They discuss how they are making "something new out of straw", and that "Spud wasn't supposed to be there". Spud concludes that they must be building a new super-sized scarecrow to replace him - what sort of surprise is that? Devastated, Spud wanders off to decide what to do. Bob reveals that today's job is to build Farmer Pickles a special new house - out of straw - and the team get to work. Meanwhile Spud comes up with a plan, he does his best to hide the straw and buy himself some time to prove how good a scarecrow he can be. Needless to say, his attempts at hiding the straw bales are not terribly successful. Farmer Pickles sees Spud in a bird-scaring frenzy and wonders what he's up to. Then, when Farmer Pickles discovers some badly hidden straw bales, Spud confesses that he hid them and pleads with Farmer Pickles not to build the new super-scarecrow. Farmer Pickles thinks this is very funny and assures Spud that there's no such thing. Farmer Pickles finally reveals the big surprise - the completed straw bale house. And what's more, Spud has his own room! Farmer Pickles even decides to call their new home "Scarecrow Cottage". Spud decides that he does like surprises after all.
