During their flight from Barcelona, as Franco's troops march into the city at the end of the Spanish Civil War, Lola and Felip look on in desperation as their daughter is kidnapped by the Falangists.
With no choice but to continue on their journey into exile, the couple ends up confined in the refugee camp at Argelers. When they manage to leave the camp, Felip returns to Barcelona to try and find their daughter, but a turn of events takes him to Africa. There he spends five years fighting under the orders of General Leclerc. Meanwhile, in France, Lola meets Manel, who works secretly guiding refugees across the border, and falls madly in love with him.
