James I, A King Remembered

The Story of One of the Most Iconic Kings in the History of Catalonia

James I, the conqueror of Mallorca and Valencia, is one of the kings that the Catalans have most admired. Born in Montpellier in 1208, he was the son of Peter II the Catholic and Maria of Montpellier, and descended from great ancestral lines: the Crown of Aragon on his father's side and the Emperor of Byzantium on his mother's side. Though he had a very difficult childhood, his adult years were filled with great conquests and reforms.
The documentary, hosted by Pasqual Maragall¿President of the Catalan Government from 2003 to 2006¿visits the most representative places in the king's life, in the company of some of the leading scholars on James I, such as Antoni Furió, Antoni Riera, Ernest Belenguer, and Teresa Vinyoles.
From the castle of Montsó, where James I spent his childhood, to the Poblet monastery, where he is buried, the documentary covers a complete route that includes Mallorca, Valencia and Barcelona. In the course of the program, Maragall interviews historians and museum conservators as well as the president of the Mallorcan Government and the Abbot of Poblet, and also recreates several events in the life of James I.
