Hereditary genetic diseases

Hereditary genetic diseases were in the spotlight of La Marató de TV3 in 1997. In that year 600 children and young people were affected in Catalonia, many with a life expectancy of less than 30 years.

There are over 6,000 known hereditary diseases, most of which are very serious and lead to all kinds of disability. Muscular dystrophies and cystic fibrosis are perhaps two of the clearest and most widespread examples of these diseases that genetic are in origin and are inherited, affecting children and youngsters in particular.

The enthusiastic support from the Catalan public for La Marató de TV3 made it possible to fund 35 biomedical research projects on hereditary genetic diseases.
