Suffering from cold and hunger after a long, hard flight, the flock stops at a fjord and meets Frija, an old, eccentric, wild goose who lives alone but who used to fly with Akka. It is not long before she tells the geese how their respected and respectable leader was a real daredevil in her youth and loved aerobatics. In fact, Akka invented the `Dizzy Dive', a now-legendary flying stunt which allowed her to be the only goose to cross `Madbird's Gap', a rocky defile swept by violent winds. Unfortunately, the food that the geese so badly need is in a boat that has been wrecked at the other end of this defile. Only Akka can save them but she feels too old to do the Dizzy Dive again and refuses to teach it to Martin and Nils whom she judges to be too young and inexperienced. Frija secretly teaches them how to do it so they can reach the boat. However, Frija's training is not perfect and Nils and Martin tackle `Madbird's Gap' without having mastered the Dizzy Dive. Frija tells Akka and she now must find the energy of her youth to try to save her friends¿ and they all finally do the Dizzy Dive together.
