¡Arriba España!

Catalan independentism spurs the Spanish extreme right wing

"¡Arriba España!"

Spanish extreme right-wing mantra.

In recent years, goaded by the Catalan independentist process, extreme right wing contingents have increasingly made their presence felt in the streets. Above all, they defend both the national and the territorial unity of Spain, displaying a certain nostalgia towards historically anti-democratic regimes while claiming to oppose immigration. "One, mighty and free" and "One Spain, not 51", both slogans of the Franco era, are the sort of claims they stand by.

Having emerged from their lethargy due to Catalan independentism, they have now made a comeback and are more active than ever before.

Organizations such as Falange, Hogar Social or Democracia Nacional flaunt their inequivocal fascist gestures and xenophobic traits wherever they go, often resulting in violent or vandalic acts.

"With Franco one lived peacefully at least", claims one of the leaders of the Democracia Nacional party. Others have been sentenced to jail for publically inducing their followers into "moderately" violent acts against journalists or representatives of associations they dislike.

Declarations and expressions blatantly expressed in the documentary. Journalists, historians and political party representatives analyze the phenomenon and pose many questions.

What might happen when the traditional parties do not any longer provide answers to the citizens and new actors emerge? Is the extreme right wing in Spain and Europe to grow further? Are they in fact a growing collective or is their presence in the streets simply more conspicuous?.

A documentary intended to make the public reflect upon what's happening around. A phenomenon occurring in Europe well into the 21st Century.
