Afternoon Tea in Geneva

Mercè Rodoreda, one of the most influential Catalan writers, was forced into exile at the end of the Spanish Civil War.

In 1973, in the last years  of the Franco dictatorship, Mercè Rodoreda coincided in Geneva with literary critic and publisher Josep Maria Castellet in Geneva and invited him to her home for tea.

The writer had always been willing to open up to others and explain what she was feeling, but that afternoon she unusually shared many of her innermost thoughts and secrets with him touching upon subjects such as her concerns and fears about literary creation, her persecuted culture, missing having a real country to belong to and the intimate relationships between men and women.

Ventura Pons, one of Barcelona's most prolific film directors, based this work on Josep Maria Castellet's Els escenaris de la memòria ("Scenes of Memory").
