Catalunya Ràdio S.R.G., S.A., was founded on June 20, 1983 to promote the use and knowledge of the Catalan language and its culture, in accordance with the principles of the Spanish Constitution and the Catalan Autonomy Statute of 1979.

Over the years Catalunya Ràdio has grown to include four stations. The first generalist station, Catalunya Ràdio, gave the group its name; Catalunya Informació is the round-the-clock news station; Catalunya Música is devoted exclusively to classical and contemporary music; and iCat fm, a new advanced multimedia radio station, closely linked to the Internet. Though the programming of the four stations is different, they all broadcast entirely in Catalan and enshrine high standards of quality.

In addition, the group has six further channels that broadcast exclusively over the Internet: TotCat, exclusively devoted to music in Catalan; iCatjazz, devoted to jazz; MusiCatles, which specialises in world music; Xahrazad, focusing on white-voice music; Mediterràdio, devoted to Mediterranean music; and Catclàssica, which specialises in classical music.

The four FM stations broadcast 35,000 hours a year, to which must be added the 52,500 hours of music programmes of the six Internet channels.

Catalunya Ràdio, the national radio broadcaster of Catalonia, covers the whole of Catalonia. It is a pioneer in state-of-the-art technology and in the creation of specialized stations and is firmly committed to quality in content and public service information.

Mission

Catalunya Radio’s mission is to offer all the citizens of Catalonia quality and efficient public service broadcasting, committed to ethical and democratic principles while promoting the Catalan language and culture. Efficiency will be foremost in the management of this production and broadcasting service, while striving for maximum public acceptance.

One of Cartalunya Radio’s main objectives is to help consolidate and expand the use of the Catalan language, culture and identity, and disseminate knowledge of Catalan culture abroad, while reflecting the diversity of contemporary society.

Catalunya Radio must work to reinforce the presence of Catalan audiovisual media throughout all Catalan-speaking territories. It must foster development in social and economic fields and work closely with the educational system. It must promote the development of the Catalan audiovisual industry and of audiovisual productions in Catalan. It must also provide an impetus for content employing new technologies and kinds of public communication such as Digital Radio, Internet, and mobile telephones.

All of these functions must be performed while being a reference for quality and innovation.
